Against the odds : 1983 WC

It is said that in the darkest night , the stars shine brightest .

The situation in 1983 WC : India was seen as an underdog . No hope at all for reaching even the knockout stage .
It was not like the Indian team of 2011 WC having giants like Tendulkar , Sehwag , Yuvraj , Dhoni , Zaheer with India being favoriate for lifting the trophy .
The team which rarely won any match in World Cup ( WC ) history , Kapil Dev the captain said on the dawn of the WC , "we are here to win" , and he proved it .

When the score is 9/4 , how often a captain's knock breaks the world record in this situation ???
It was Kapil Dev who came to the crease then and scored record 175 not out in 138 balls  in that match against Zimbabwe . Playing at a strike rate of 126.81, was the dream back in the days.
It takes an unflinching self confidence and a great sense of responsibility to play such an innings .

Later in the finals defending 183 in a 60 over match and taking that highly difficult catch of Sir Viv Richards which was the turning point of the match ; these made Kapil Dev and the team immortal in history of Indian Cricket .

Although it'll be improper to compare the captains in the past due to different era and situations but I think they share a bond .
Before M.S.Dhoni who brought fireworks of the T20 WC 2007 and WC 2011 , before Sourav Ganguly who nurtured the flame for those fireworks , it was Kapil Dev who lit the first spark way back in 1983 for the whole indian cricket .
